Can you advise me if smoke alarms are a legal requirement in a rented property?
!
Alarms are not generally required, except for some HMOs (houses in multiple occupation) which may require full fire alarm. However, new build and significant modification to a property could bring it within the Building Regulations requirement to have linked, mains operated, smoke detectors, usually one per floor. Remember, smoke detectors may or may not be a legal requirement, however, they are well proven to save lives. For this reason alone they should be considered important in all lettings.
